Mark Lawson with Haroon Mirza

A packed crowd came to the prize giving ceremony at Leeds Art Gallery last night to hear who would win the fourth Northern Art Prize of £16,500. Mark Lawson announced the winner as Haroon Mirza. David Jacques, Lubaina Himid & Alec Finlay each received £1500

Lubaina Himid won the People’s Choice Award (as voted for on this site by YOU!) from Dirk Mischendahl, Chair of Logistik Group who are one of the founding sponsors of the Northern Art Prize.

Thanks to Leeds City Council, Arup, Leeds Metropolitan University, Mint Hotels and Welcome to Yorkshire for their continued support of the prize.

There was certainly a lot of buzz on Twitter, almost as much as in the Tiled Hall Cafe (Leeds Art Gallery)

A great night – well done to all involved.

I was rooting for Alec but I’m very happy for all the short-listed artists who made for an excellent show…

    Congratulations, Haroon!

Many thanks for a myriad of spectacular art, wine & conversations about the winners which I thought were spot on – Haroon as winner and Lubaina as people choice.
I was torn between the two artists and their piece’s everytime I visited the exhibition, and listened to both their talk’s, they were my favourite’s of the lot and very happy that they both won.
Already looking forward to next year’s!

I am very pleased to see that Lubaina Himid was acknowledged through the peoples choice as she has always been consistently strong in her own right and also as a support mechanism for so many newer emerging artists.

It was dissapointing to not see Leo Fitzmaurice feature in the winners listings as I believe his work to be one of the strongest and most impactful in response to both artistic context and and a sense of understanding ones surroundings with ease and flare. His work is bold yet relatable to both artists and ‘general public’ who I feel is still an almost forgotten entity in contemporary art.
We make for ourselves of course but inevetably to be viewed by another is where the excitement and life of an art piece happens. So to only ever pitch to those who have pre existing liking or willingness to ones work is inevitably in direct contradiction to what so many art pieces try to accomplish….. the art of debate and discussion and the art to inspire from the ground upwards.

It was also interesting to see such a small list of nominators. Perhaps to be acknowledged you have to be viewed by only 5 that matter.
